The Waiting by Michael Connelly

Honestly. How does he do it? Michael Connelly. I have read every single thing he has written and the standard he sets and keeps is extraordinary. Not a word out of place, maintains the tension, the narrative arc is flawless, both within the individual book and the series. I couldn’t put this down but read into the wee hours to finish it and then was disappointed I had. You’d think I’d have learned by now – I do this with all his books.

So, this is a Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch tale. Renee is the only “badged” police officer in the cold case unit she runs. The rest of the staff  are all volunteers – that is until none other than Maddy Bosch, in her third year now as a cop, joins her on an ad hoc basis. Just as well, as Renee has her hands full trying to find her stolen badge and gun as well as solve an old rape case – one that proves to be deadly. But when Maddy uncovers evidence that leads to the perpetrator in one of the most famous murder cases in LA, Renee must pull every trick to ensure that justice is served.

A fantastic, beautifully paced installment in a fabulous series.
