  1. Thank you for this article, Karen. It needs to go in every women’s magazine and in every newspaper in this country. And those reactionaries who see it as taking away individual rights can stick their heads back in the sand.

I had a crush on one of my teachers when I was 5 and enjoyed having sexual thoughts ever since. Kids in the school played kiss chase but I never did and I’d have benefited I think from a bit more encouragement to be more sexually confident. From my time working in a shop that sold toys I like Bratz more than Barbie, because they encourage girls to expect to be valued as sexual beings, confident and empowered to choose who they wish, or say no to everyone. If adults are sex/choice positive then introducing children to those values is no problem. But I agree with you about kids feeling heavy pressure to conform to a commercially driven idea of sexuality and thats not good, so perhaps the Swedish advertising ban idea is a good one, if it give parents a bit more influence.

    Anyway, apologies to Barbie :)

thankyou for your very insightful article. I agree it should go in every women’s magazine. Please keep up your commentary on these issues. You are a light shining in an otherwise very murky and dark world where greed is good and profit and self gratification at the expense of kids is the name of the game. Oh, one last thing, you don’t have to apologise and say you are not a wowser (whatever people want that to mean). You are a very accomplished person standing up against a huge tide of “nasty stuff” coming down the river. You have real guts and strength to do this already and so you do not need the acceptance of anyone to say the things you say. Please bravely keep up the good work and never give in to the commercial pressures because it might offend some readers.

  11. My little niece just got into her Barbie phase. It was Elmo, then Dora, now Barbie. They haven’t changed much since I was young.
