The end of an era, certainly. I have to say, though, that for me a lot of the problems I have with Oprah were best summed up by Jon Stewart’s ‘moment of Zen’ a year or so back….

Thakyou Karen, I was scared u were going to bag her out. As a sec0ondary teacher, the work she has done for sexual abuse survivors rates her amongst the most high. The fact that she is filthy rich yet generous, famous yet openly flawed and willing tackled todays issues especially for TV audiences that otherwise were doomed to old movie reruns, has to count for something. I have often used her topics at school so well done Oprah.

Jon Stewart is classic, Tony, isn’t he? Sue, it wouldn’t be right to ‘bag her out’ I can’t. I think she has done so much good, even though I have a few problems with her – as a brand, as a celebrity and with what I perceive as narcissism, but they’re my problems, but they don’t stop me from seeing the good she’s done. I really commend her for the work she’s done in bringing facts and problems that are too often swept under the carpet to the table – as well as tackling head on homophobia, abuse, poverty, racism etc. I think it’s the way others respond to her that has become quite incredible – the hype and over the top way they hang on her every word… that makes me uneasy and a little embarrassed. But, I think the fact she used a medium like TV and the genre of the talk show to do so much good is something extraordinary and does show you ignore or trivialise either at your (generic ‘your’ of course!) own peril :)
