I do believe that television/video games do influence violence in the community, but i also think that the people who are influenced enough to act on what they see already have problems. In a world where violence is so big in our schools, i think that schools should make it compulsory for students to talk to a councellor at least once a month/term. That way those who are likely to have violent tendencies will hopefully be able to get help before anything terrible happens. Also school is all about preparing you for the future, there should be regular classes on mental health from someone who is trained in the area, to teach kids different ways in which to resove conflict and express their emotions without being violent or abusive.
Because violence is a growing problem in the community, i believe school is the best place to try to teach kids the ‘correct’ ways in which to handle their problems. Where as if it tought in the home, many people have different views, whether they live in an abusive household or just believe that thier child would do the right thing if the situation arose. So for those parents who do try to teach their children to ‘be nice’ and dont let them watch violence on television or play violent games, their childs behavior , unfortunalety will not affect how other children act around them.

There was an incedent in NSW where one father put another father into hospital because a fight between first graders escalated into a family feud. What message did that send to both those little boys? Eight years from now, will they be taking to each other with knives?

We have to ask ourselves – why are we all so violent? Because the ‘bad guys’ are valourized as cool and kindness is seen as weakness. Society needs a value adjustment.

Thanks so much for you comments… I didn’t hear about the fathers in NSW only about another story, last night after I posted this blog, about a mother stabbing another mother outside a school in Sydney! Over a man and in front of children and adult witnesses…
There was also a story on the 7pm Project where they discussed the rise of ‘knife culture’ in schools and read emails from teenagers who wrote that many teens carry knives these days – for the reasons I outlined – self-defense and as a symbol of masculinity and toughness. Hard to fathom in some respects, but I also worry that, as another news item dominates the media, the importance of what lies behind this tragedy will be lost until something else happens… We have to keep talking and acting in order to instigate change!
Thanks for engaging – really appreciate it…
